The Best Types of Candles for Your Home

Candles are another form of comfort to combat the chilly, frigid Chicago winter. Before you reach for your next candle to light, consider switching to a candle that doesn’t only smell good, but won’t cause any damage to your home’s air quality. Put simply, some candles poison your air while others don’t cause any health damage. Take a look at the label the next time you purchase a candle to make sure it is safe for your family!

What About Paraffin Wax?

Paraffin wax is a common ingredient found in candles, so many people think that it is perfectly normal and safe. However, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, paraffin wax candles are one of the leading causes of indoor air pollution. In reality, this ingredient is made from the organic material in petroleum sludge, the remains of oil and gas production. From there, the paraffin wax is bleached and processed for a variety of uses, including candles.

When paraffin candles are burning, they can release chemicals into the air, including toluene, soot, benzene and other harsh, damaging toxins. As you can imagine, many people inadvertently inhale these chemicals simply by lighting a candle.

Opt for Beeswax Candles Instead

Beeswax candles actually help clean the air by releasing negative ions that bind with toxins and eliminate them. If anyone in your home suffers from asthma or allergies, beeswax candles are a great choice!
