Space Heater Safety Tips

We’ve all been there: cuddling up to a space heater because no matter what we do, we just can’t seem to get warm. Although using a space heater to stay warm during the winter may seem innocent, it can be cause for disaster as well. As providers of heating and cooling repair in Irving Park, we want to make sure that all of our clients are aware of the potential dangers that using a space heater may cause if not used correctly.

This winter, keep these tips in mind.

Don’t Leave it Unattended

If you have your space heater on in one room, make sure you do not leave the room while the heater is still plugged in. You’ll also want to make sure that you don’t leave any children or pets unattended while the space heater is turned on, as it could burn them or get knocked over and start a fire.

Be Mindful of the Power Source

It is ideal to plug your space heater directly into an outlet rather than using a power strip. This is because power strips can easily overheat if too many outlets are being used, and this increases the risk of a fire. Make sure that there is not another item plugged into the wall outlet that the space heater is using.

Place it Strategically

Placement of your space heater is one of the most important aspects of space heater safety. They must be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn; this includes papers, clothes and rugs.

Space heaters should never be your main source of warmth. Contact American Home Heating for heating and cooling repair in Irving Park today!
