Cleaning Your AC Vents

At American Home Heating & Air Conditioning, we’ve provided air conditioning repair in Avondale and surrounding neighborhoods since 1962, and we know that one of the best things you can do to keep your house clean and comfortable during our hot, humid Chicagoland summers is to clean your AC vents regularly.

Why bother with this task? Cleaning the AC vents removes dirt, dust, hair, pollen, spider webs and other allergens and helps keep your system running smoothly and efficiently, saving money on both cooling and heating. So, let’s get to work.

What you’ll need

The basic tools are:

  • Heavy duty vacuum cleaner
  • Screw driver
  • Broom
  • Cleaning brush

What to do

  • Turn off the power to your unit either at the thermostat or breaker box.
  • Unscrew the vent covers from your walls or ceilings.
  • Use a brush to clean the covers. If they’re really dirty, you might need to use soap and water.

Vacuum the duct work as much as possible. To complete this part of the task, consider renting a heavy duty vacuum cleaner as the standard home vacuum isn’t strong enough to clean deep into the crevices of the duct work. Make sure the vacuum you use has a hose that is long enough to reach deep into the ducts as there may be mold and mildew growing inside.

Finally, replace the covers, replace your system’s old air filter, turn on the power and you’re good to go!
