Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips

At American Home Heating & Air Conditioning, we’ve provided air conditioning repair in Avondale and other areas of Chicagoland since 1962. We know there are few household responsibilities that pay higher dividends than maintaining your air conditioning system, saving money on energy bills while prolonging the life of your unit.

To help you stay cool this summer, here are three basic AC maintenance tips that any homeowner can perform.

Tip #1 – Replace the air filter

Replacing your unit’s filter regularly is extremely important. When the filter is full of dust, dirt, and allergen particles, air flow decreases, making your system work harder and use more energy. The air flowing through your system may also become dirtier and dustier, triggering allergy and asthma symptoms for those inside your home.

For older units where the filter is located behind the return air grille either on a wall or in the ceiling, consider replacing the filter monthly during high usage months.

For newer units with a filter in a slot on the side, top, or bottom of the furnace, change the filter twice yearly, just before the cooling and heating seasons begin.

Tip #2 – Check the thermostat

Check your thermostat to make sure it’s working properly, keeping your home at the right temperature. If you have an older, mechanical thermostat, consider upgrading to a programmable model installed by one of our expert technicians.

With a programmable thermostat, you can set a higher temperature during the day when no one’s home and then begin cooling the house before people return for the evening.

Tip #3 – Clean the outside unit

Over time, dirt, leaves, and grass can build up on the outside unit, reducing air flow and reducing your system’s capacity. First, turn off the power, either at the breaker box or the shut-off box outside near the unit. Next, use your garden hose to gently wash away the debris, starting at the top of the unit with the hose held at about a 45° angle.

Do not use a power washer as this could damage the unit, and trim shrubs away from the unit to maintain proper air flow.

Beyond these basics, be sure to call American Home Heating & Air Conditioning for all air conditioning repair in Avondale. We’ll keep your unit running properly and your home cool and comfortable all summer long.
